International workshop Defending Human Rights, 8-10 December, The Hague

13 July 2010

Justitia et Pax organizes an international workshop on Defending Human Rights from 8–10th December in The Hague. Human right defenders from different parts of the world will share their experiences in order to specify their concrete needs.

Justitia et Pax works closely with human rights defenders in The Netherlands, Africa, Asia and Europe who share our vision on human rights and social justice issues. In our multi-annual plan 2007-2010 we have further developed ways and means to effectively support these human rights defenders to do their job. Now it is time to bring together these experiences and to look forward towards future cooperation in the framework of our new strategic plan 2011-2015.

The workshop will give special attention to the needs of particularly vulnerable groups, such as:
  • defenders working at grass root level to promote women's and children's rights and religious freedom
  • those working with minorities’ rights
The human right defenders who will participate in the workshop will help us to further develop the different forms of expertise/modules, and to develop a programme to make the expertise available to human rights defenders all over the world.

It is a process of linking and learning, by sharing experiences, success stories and challenges. And together we would like to develop a lobby agenda to make The Netherlands more accessible for human rights defenders who are unable to stay in their home countries, by developing specific measures of temporary protection and shelter, the so called 'Shelter Cities Initiative' .

More information will be available after the summer on our website and in the October newsletter.
