Breed Mensenrechtenoverleg NL

The Breed Mensenrechten Overleg Nederland (BMO-NL) (Broad Human Rights Consultation) is a cooperation between Dutch human rights organisations. The member organisations are of the opinion that The Netherlands should also meet international standards for human rights. They regularly speak with the Dutch government and suggest improvements.

BMO-NL's members include:

The member organisations inform one another and – where useful – harmonise their activities. Justice and Peace Netherlands currently holds the positions of chair and secretary.

Activities

The members of BMO-NL made a case for the founding of a Nationaal Instituut voor de Rechten van de Mens (NIRM) [National Human Rights Institute] that meets the international obligations and preconditions of the Paris Principles which were ratified by the United Nations in 1993. In July 2009, the council of ministers approved the founding of the NIRM. Over the coming years, BMO-NL will focus on the following:
  • the further shaping of the NIRM;
  • humane aliens policy;
  • combating discrimination;
  • introducing human rights education into the curriculum at schools.

Development

BMO-NL was founded in February 2009. The Breed Mensenrechten Overleg (BMO) of Dutch human rights organisations that focuses on Dutch foreign human rights policy has existed since 1979. The BMO advises the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. More coordination and consultation proved necessary between NGOs and between the various ministries and NGOs with regard to human rights policy in the Netherlands. BMO-NL enables members to efficiently draw politicians and policy makers' attention to Dutch human rights themes.

In brief
  • The Netherlands must also comply with international human rights standards.
  • In the coming years, BMO-NL will mainly focus on the National Institute for Human Rights, a humane policy on migrants and asylum seekers, fighting discrimination and promoting human rights education.
