Pastoralists in East Africa
Pastoralists are nomadic herdsmen. In East African countries like Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, they are often discriminated against. Their rights to land and water are increasingly becoming marginalized. Read more »

Burundi

Sudan
For years on end, wars and violence have completely disrupted social structures in Sudan. Ethnic and religious minorities have no rights. There is no functioning rule of law to protect people. In particular, violence against women is widespread. Read more »

Georgia
Approximately one in six Georgians belongs to a minority population group. In the past decades, many of them have left Georgia on account of the government’s discriminatory policies. They move to neighbouring countries in the hope of finding more favourable living conditions and equal treatment. Read more »

Democratic Republic of Congo
Congo is still the scene of conflicts between rebel groups which cause many civilian casualities. Women in particular are victims of sexual violence on a large scale. Human rights defenders and journalists are threatened and are often unsure of their lives.

Ethiopia/Nigeria/Zimbabwe
Human rights defenders in countries like Ethiopia, Nigeria and Zimbabwe cannot openly support human rights in their country. Their position is perilous. The national authorities suppress every sign of dissent and issue discriminatory legislation to obstruct human rights activities. In consequence, the work on human rights and democracy issues is criminalised. Read more »

Pakistan
The government of Pakistan, installed in February 2008, is cautiously showing its commitment to improving the human rights situation. Still, many of its promises concerning the protection of human rights are not being met. Read more »

Papua
In the Indonesian province of Papua, tensions have escalated. This is mainly due to the misuse of power and human rights violations by the Indonesian army. The political ambitions of the Papuans are suppressed.

Almost 300 million people in South Asia have been systematically discriminated against for centuries on the basis of their work and descent. They are Dalits, also known as ‘untouchables’ and ‘outcasts’. They experience violence, discrimination and social exclusion on a daily basis. Read more »
